Leading with Engagement

Recently, I was listening to a leadership podcast and the host stated, “Leadership is not about competence, it is about engagement.” This struck me as I contemplated how much time leaders spend asserting their competence. Having highly engaged employees is a by-product of highly engaged leadership because engagement starts at the top. Organizations that do not focus on leadership engagement are missing the mark.

A CEO that delegates engagement to others such as HR or the “Chief Engagement Officer” is making a huge leadership mistake. Upper management needs to embrace the old adage of “leading yourself before you lead others.” The CEO should assess their engagement before enacting a strategy to improve employee engagement. Do not waste money on assessing engagement, if you have not assessed your leadership.
